For my Web2 class we’ve been looking at the way type is used on the web. “Text as the Interface” was our theme for this week. We had to utilize the constraints and capabilities of typography on the web to make something aesthetically pleasing and responsive. Test.

My focus with this project was on the ”Public Sphere”; That in this highly trafficked online community and network, the tools of digital media are changing the way we process information and our sense of retaining information might not be what it used to. Instead we are used to this idea of fastness and skimming, and our ability to process information has become very mechanical. Weeding out the unwanted and looking only at relevant information.

I want to approach this topic with a speculative project on our ability to call out non-useful or un-relevant information. I want to propose a browser extension, which when turned on, monitors your searches, and at any time the person will be able to deem a page or site “not good enough” (for whatever key search term that person used), in which the content will be “black out” for anyone using the extension searching for similar content. Search results, also, become catered to the community’s efforts, presenting themselves further and further down the list of available results.

For my Design and Rebuilding Journalism class, we spent the majority of the semester examining local news. My final project focused on redesigning the NY Times East Village Local Blog. I set out to create a more visual representation of the news, addressing the existing disconnect between what is being read and where it’s taking place; putting emphasis on location. Also creating a more interactive reading experience by the means of a googlemaps mashup; location tags in articles and events would relate to icons on the map which could be filtered out by categories and then further be manipulated by time thus giving the readers full visual representation of where things are taking place, their relation to it, the ability to read category-specific articles, but also the power to view whats been happening over time or on/between specific dates. It’s a way that gives readers the ability to relate more to the news.
